Digital Designer

COMPANY: Drexel University, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, Idea Lab

LOCATION: Philadelphia

REQUIREMENTS: The idea lab is looking for a motivated graphic designer who will be responsible for the design and user experience of a program website, as well as, other design collateral such as graphics, posters, and publications.  This is an hourly position supported by a grant.

DUTIES: The idea Lab is looking for a motived graphic design to work on Project Unlock, a multi institute collaboration who mission is to unlock the potential of an organization’s advisory board to effect transformation in UG engineering education. The graphic designer will be responsible for the design and user experience of the project’s website, as well as, collateral designs such as graphics, posters, and publications. This position will primarily be responsible for design and layout of the website, including translating the client’s needs into visual language, assisting with interface design, designing graphical components, and fulfilling website update requests.

Under the creative direction of the core team, this position will:

  • Create user centered design for the website; design visual layout; generate graphics; build or utilize templates according to design guidelines and accessibility standards.
  • Consider client needs and requirements, translating those into innovative and functional design solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with the core teams to build, maintain, and update the website in WordPress or  Drupal using HTML(5)/CSS(3).
  • Create templates for publications, programs, and other digital or printed work

Upper level UG or  Master’s student, preferably in Graphic Design or related fields, and at least one year of relevant experience designing and developing websites (or equivalent combination of education and experience) required. Must be passionate about crafting visual experiences online and have a strong design sense. Experience with building websites required. WordPress and/or other CMS experience required, along with knowledge of design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite and Sketch. Some knowledge of HTML and CSS required, along with a willingness to build technical skills over time and work in tandem with a developer. Applicant just have a proven sense of design, with the ability to translate it into digital interfaces, and a portfolio demonstrating strong typography and layout skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail also required. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively.

COMPENSATION: hourly rate $25-40 per hour depending on experience

Game Programmer


POSITION: Game Programmer, UG or Graduate, for Educational Game Project

REQUIREMENTS: Game Programmer, UG or Graduate, with experience programming in Unity
DUTIES: This position is for programming a small mobile game using Unity. The game is a relatively basic level tower defense game, with a theme revolving around invasive bacteria and the immune system. The ultimate goal of this position is to reach a prototype, alpha, beta, and then finished product for open use by the public. The initial project focuses achieving the prototype. The main focus of this game is to teach players of high school age about the basics of the immune system.

  • Will need to produce functioning code to be the backbone of a basic tower defense game.
  • Will have the ability to pursue the project through multiple phases, eventually to a finished product.
  • Will need to become familiar with the basics of the immune system, for which employer will provide training.
  • The initial project is anticipated to be 10-20 hours. With satisfactory performance, work on additional stages of the project will be available.

POSITION: FREELANCE – Junior interactive developer
